Jane Monheit
Friday, July 21 at 7:30 p.m.
Floor Side Reserved $35
Premium Reserved $45
Jane Monheit and jazz standards are a match made in vocal heaven. To wit, writing of her 2002 performance at London’s Royal Festival Hall, The Guardian wrote: "Jane Monheit has so many natural gifts – a phenomenal ear, wide vocal range, rhythmic poise and musical ingenuity – but perhaps the most precious of these is restraint. It is fatally easy for a virtuoso singer to reduce a beautiful song to rubble. Monheit decorates a melody, lights up a lyric, but never loses the essential thread of the song itself."

Tommy Dorsey Orchestra

Friday, August 4 at 7:30 p.m.
Floor Side Reserved $35
Premium Reserved $45
The most popular dance band of The Big Band era is likewise the most popular of the Big Bands that are touring today. Now led by veteran trombonist, Buddy Morrow, The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra is very much alive and swinging. The Seattle Times jazz critic said "The swing revival has been a blast, but what pure pleasure to hear an authentic, professional dance band from the swing era focus on, music – instead of clothes, schtick and campy jump tunes... boy, these guys sure can play."

Bucky Pizzarelli & Family
With the John Pizzarelli Trio featuring Martin Pizzarelli and Ray Kennedy with Jessica Molaskey

Saturday, August 19 7:30 p.m.
All Seats $55
A fixture at SVAC since 2001, it’s The First Family of Cool, featuring the legendary jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli with the John Pizzarelli Trio (John and Martin Pizzarelli and Ray Kennedy), and John’s wife, the Broadway actress and cabaret singer, Jessica Molaskey (John likes to refer to the group as "the von Trapp family on martinis."). The trio is a perennial Arkell favorite, Bucky made his well-received debut two seasons ago (with the Legends Trio), and this will be Molaskey’s second outing in southern Vermont. This concert is being held in memory of Fred Richter, devoted jazz fan and loyal supporter of SVAC.

Barbara Riley hosts:
The Manhattan Transfer

Friday, August 25 7:30 p.m.
All Seats $55
Between The Manhattan Transfer’s early days at New York clubs like Trudy Heller’s, Reno Sweeny’s, and Max’s Kansas City and the present lies 35 years, 26 albums and more Grammy Awards than you could shake a mic stand at. Along the way, they’ve been pushing and redefining the boundaries of vocal music in the context of jazz, pop and other styles and have garnered a fan base that spans the globe. This very special engagement is made possible thanks to the generosity of long-time SVAC supporter and patron of the performing arts, impresario Barbara Riley.

Members $15/Non-members $20

By any standard, Matthew Bogdanos, author of Thieves of Baghdad: One Marine’s Passion to Recover the World’s Greatest Stolen Treasures, is an accomplished man. He’s been an assistant district attorney in Manhattan, a colonel in the Marine Reserves and a middleweight boxer; he holds a degree in classics from Bucknell University, a law degree and a masters in Classical Studies from Columbia University, and a masters degree from the Army War College. Recalled to active duty after 9/11, Bogdanos led a multi-agency task force in Afghanistan which obtained intelligence on eleven of the "Top 25" Taliban and al-Qaeda leaders, for which he was awarded a Bronze Star. In April 2003, Bogdanos began the work that would earn him a 2005 National Humanities Medal and become the subject of Thieves of Baghdad, the investigation of the looting of Baghdad’s Iraq Museum, which resulted in the recovery of over 5,000 antiquities in six countries. He has since returned to the New York County District Attorney’s Office and continues the hunt for Iraq’s stolen antiquities. Mr. Bogdanos will be signing copies of his book, Thieves of Baghdad: One Marine’s Passion to Recover the World’s Greatest Stolen Treasure.

Memories of WWII: Photographs from the Archives of the Associated Press
Saturday, September 16, 2006
Members $50/Non-members $60
In his 65 years of full-time journalism, from his days as a campus correspondent at The Houston Post during high school to his departure from the anchor desk of the CBS Evening News on March 6, 1981, Walter Cronkite covered the majority of momentous news events of the 20th Century. It was as a United Press correspondent that Mr. Cronkite covered World War II – landing with the invading Allied troops in North Africa, covering the battle of the North Atlantic in 1942, taking part in the Normandy beachhead assaults in 1944 and participating as one of the first newsmen in B-17 raids over Germany. After reporting the German surrender, Mr. Cronkite established United Press bureaus in Europe, was named United Press bureau chief in Brussels and covered the Nuremberg trials of Goering, Hess and other top Nazis. From 1946 to 1948 he was chief correspondent for United Press in Moscow. No journalist was ever more trusted – a nationwide survey conducted in 1995, more than a decade after leaving the CBS anchor desk, he again was voted "Most Trusted Man in Television News" – and few, if any others, are first-hand witnesses to history. Mr. Cronkite wrote the introduction to Memories of WWII and will be signing copies of the book.
