Scott Dimond, Curator or the Elizabeth de C. Wilson Museum, is presenting a series of three lively, illustrated talks focusing on Early American art. Prior to his arrival at the Arts Center, Dr. Dimond, who took his Ph.D. in History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania, held a curatorial research post at the Currier Museum of Art, in Manchester, New Hampshire; before that he was the Henry Luce Cataloguer of the Bowdoin Museum of Art’s American Collection.

April 19: "A Nation of Illustration: A Hands-On History of the Illustrator’s Art in America"
From the crude woodcuts adorning eighteenth-century newspapers and broadsides to the computer-generated graphics of our own time, illustration has played a prevalent, if not always prominent, role in American popular culture. Utilizing actual printed ephemera including newspapers, magazines, books, mass-produced lithographs and other media, this talk will cover some of the major trends and artists that have defined more than 200 years of illustration in the United States. Material will be presented in a casual "show-and-tell" format, allowing participants to see and handle illustrations in their original contexts.

Members $65, Non-Members $70

Take Home Elvis
Elvis Might Leave the Building, With You!

Aside from all of the dining, drinking, laughing and gambling that goes on, the Southern Vermont Arts Center’s annual Monte Carlo Night fundraiser is known for its truly spectacular auction items and the 2008 event may be the mother and father of them all. No, make that The King of them all, as this year’s auction boasts a signed and numbered (Edition #1/12) George Kalinsky photograph of Elvis Presley performing live in concert at Madison Square Garden, June,1972.

Unveiled at the Presley estate, Graceland, over this past Memorial Day Weekend, the photograph is valued at $6,000 and comes with an additional $400 worth of Conservation Quality framing provided by Advanced Imaging and Framing of Manchester. George Kalinsky, who generously donated the print, is the official Madison Square Garden photographer and a recent inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Other items to be auctioned – under the able gavel of Lyman Foss – include original works of art by SVAC member-artists Nancy Tips, Ace Manley and Keith Hoffman; an 08/09 Bromley Mountain Full Season Pass; two days for two at the Stratton Golf School; a NYC Arts Weekend with lodging, lunching at The Modern Restaurant and the 21 Club, passes to MoMA, The Met, the Guggenheim and the Frick Museums; a NYC Sports Weekend with lodging at The New York Athletic Club and four tickets to a Giants game; a handmade Tim Thompson fly rod plus two days for one at the Orvis Fly Fishing School.

Don’t forget, your friends and neighbors will be dealing your lucky cards and seeing to the professional Black Jack and Poker tables, Roulette and Craps tables and the Wheel of Chance. A delectable buffet supper and a cash bar complete the evening. Tickets for this night-to-remember ($65 for Arts Center Members, $70 for non-Members) are available via the Arts Center at 802-362-1405.

Art on the Hill
Saturday, September 13, 2008
10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
Free

In its four short years of existence, Art on the Hill has become, hands down, the Arts Center’s most popular family-friendly event. A project of SVAC’s Outreach Program, this free annual event is designed to pleasantly expose area families to the arts and show those folks who may not be familiar with our facilities that SVAC is a welcoming – and fun! – place for all ages. Grandma, Grandpa, Mom, Dad and all of the kids are invited to participate in a variety of artistic media, hands-on, and to have a whole lot of fun in the bargain. Painting, photography, dancing, jewelry making, and chalk design are just a few of the activities that will be offered. In addition, the Wilson Museum will be open and families are invited to take in its two current exhibitions, Diana Walker: Photojournalist and Janet Fish: Into the Light. A traditional barbecue with all of the fixings will be available, proceeds to benefit the Arts Center’s expanded educational programs.

Going once, going twice… It’s the 3rd Annual Fresh Paint Auction to benefit SVAC! Here’s how it works… Barbara Melhado, Chair of the Fresh Paint Auction, has asked local Artist-Members and a select number of guest artists "from away" to take part in this special fund-raising art auction and the response, once again, has been tremendous. Some 30 artists are expected to complete one or more paintings, either in studio or en plein air, which will, in turn, be going home with the lucky highest bidder. The Fresh Paint Auction is expertly gaveled by auctioneer Mary Anne Lukas. Works can be previewed at 5:30 p.m. in the Arkell Pavilion; the auction will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Scottish Winter Ball

The most elegant and dazzling event of the Christmas season is, without question, the bi-annual Scottish Winter Ball. Piped into the Colonnade Room by a parade of bagpipes and the chef bearing the traditional holiday haggis, guests are treated to a beautifully prepared feast, live music, and dancing into the wee hours.
