It is our pleasure to announce that Janie Cohen, former director of the Fleming Museum at UVM, will jury the 2025 Juried Member Exhibition. Cohen is also a visual artist who recently had a Solo Exhibition at SVAC in 2024. She brings extensive knowledge of both the museum field and Vermont’s contemporary art scene to this project.
Juror Bio:
Janie Cohen directed the Fleming Museum of Art at the University of Vermont, Burlington, from 2002 to 2022. She served in curatorial positions for fourteen years prior to that, organizing exhibitions and projects in Europe and the U.S. As a Picasso scholar, she has curated exhibitions and published on the artist in the U.S., Germany, Netherlands, and Spain. Cohen also has a visual art practice making hand-sewn works from unusual historical and contemporary cloth that she has collected. Cohen has worked in this medium since college, carrying out her artistic practice privately during her museum career. Since 2016 her work has been exhibited in eleven exhibitions in New England, including three solo exhibitions. Her work is in private collections throughout the country.
Juried Show Theme:
Energy & Stillness: “Cycles of energy and stillness are internal environments that are with us always. They accompany us through the seasons, through the years, through any given day in one’s life. We do not always acknowledge them; we may not even be aware of them. They interact with our external environments in ways that are sometimes in alignment, sometimes not. Artmaking is affected by both energy and stillness, enriched by both states, reflecting them and sometimes even taking them as subject matter.
Whether you experience these states as objective or subjective, cognitive or embodied, dreamlike or crystalline, or in other ways, we invite you to be aware of them as you create, and to recognize their presence in your work.”
-Janie Cohen
Application Process:

You will be notified whether your work has been selected for the exhibition by the end of March. On May 17, the exhibition will open to the public. There will be an award ceremony when the Juror’s Awards will be announced; stay tuned for details on date and time.
